Fish Production (2022-2023):
- Total Fish Production: 4.76 million metric tons (2022-23).
- Aquaculture Production: 2.61 million metric tons (around 55% of total fish production).
- Inland Capture Fisheries: 1.21 million metric tons.
- Marine Fisheries: 0.94 million metric tons.
- Growth in Production: The fisheries sector has grown at an average rate of 5.43% per year from 2009-10 to 2022-23, showing consistent growth.
Contribution to Economy:
- Fisheries contribute 3.57% to Bangladesh’s GDP and 26.50% to the agricultural GDP.
- The sector supports 12% of the total population, providing direct and indirect employment to around 18 million people.
Export and Economic Importance:
- Fisheries products, especially shrimp and prawn, form a significant portion of Bangladesh’s export basket.
- Export earnings from fisheries amounted to $540 million in 2022-23, primarily from shrimp, contributing around 2.52% of national export earnings.
